Water clarity in the Bitterroot and a new fawn in our yard

The Bitterroot has come up again, but for the last few days it has been fishing. The water clarity is good. We are looking at warmer weather for the next few days and then a cool down. This is the time of year when the fishing status is day-to-day. It could be outstanding with all the water and the hatches, or it could be glaring and hot...not so good for fishing.

The Blackfoot has a hatch going on now, but the water is dirty. The Big Hole is starting to rise with the warmer weather.

This photo was taken off our deck a few days ago with a telephoto lense. Mom and fawn succesfully made it into the woods with out noticing me and my camera.

Another visitor, a wild gosling.

The goose is hanging around my chicken coop. The photo to the right is about a week later. If you click on it, you will get a bigger size and see more detail. The primary wing quills are a blue color. Interesting!

Keith Oden, sons David and Travis; Richard Campo, son Richard; Jeff Cockrill, son Colton; and David Graham fished with Wapiti Waters on the Bitterroot River. The big surge of our spring run-off happened earlier and this group happened to hit the "coolest temps" of our spring fishing. They managed to get out all three days, catch fish and see the river with quite a bit of water.

Posted by Merle Ann Loman: The evening of May 8 and all day May 9 Jack fished with Dixon W. Benz, II on the Missouri River. Once again, they stayed at the Prewett Creek Inn, http://www.prewettcreekinn.com/. By the looks on Dixon's face, I am pretty sure he had a great time. I know Jack did.

This is a really nice brown trout caught by Dixon. There were a lot of fish caught these two days by Dixon and Jack from the drift boat and by wading.

To the right is another photo of Dixon. He is wade fishing near Jack's drift boat. You can click on the photos for a larger view.

This last photo is of a brown trout caught by Jack on a number 14 Blue Winged Olive (BWO) pattern. If you compare it to the seat box, you will notice it is quite large. I am told it was 23 inches plus. This beautiful fish was released right after the quick photo-op.

After fishing with Dixon, Jack spent a day exploring more of the MO (Missouri River), stayed the night in Butte and the following day traveled to the Big Hole River to fish with David Baltimore and Marshall Bloom. The weather on the Big Hole was chilly and the water big, but they had a good day. More to come on the Big Hole River soon. The water level is dropping and he is planning on more trips there this week.

Our friend Jim Wellendorf spring fishing in Pennsylvania

Jim started out as a client many years ago. He became a cherished friend who stays in touch. Thank you, Jim. Your friendship enriches our lives. Due to life's circumstances, he hasn't been able to come out west for many years. We miss him but enjoy his frequent emails and photos.

Message from Jim:

Picture from Tuesday afternoon. Big Pine Creek is beautiful. Wide, swift and clear. Difficult to wade. Fishing was tough. Windy and no hatches. I caught the trout in the picture after my 1000th cast. I caught it on a March Brown dry fly , six 16. Nice fish.

Jim and his wife Nancy live with their six year old dog, Tres. She is a beauty!

Posted by Merle. In March, Will McDowell and his son Dylan fished with Jack Mauer, Wapiti Waters. I don't think Dylan had fished from a boat before. We don't have photos of the day, but Dylan sent this great postcard as a thank you. It reads:

Jack - I wanted to thank you for the fishing trip. It was a ton of fun & me and my dad learned alot. I won't soon forget that beautiful rainbow I caught. I hope you have a good spring and a good fishing season. Thanks a lot, Dylan
