Fly Fishing the Bitterroot with Connells, Thomas' and Robertsons

Susan Robertson's fish on Wednesday - photo by guide, Dave Heimes
This week has been a great week. Three couples are here that we love to fish with. They have been coming every year for awhile now. During this year's visit, someone (or a few someones) from their group has fished every other day. They know how to enjoy Montana (even if it rains) and have fun and we are glad to help. It also give us and them an opportunity to work with great guides. Thanks to all of you.

  1. Beautiful rainbow. I follow your blog because I have floated the B-Root twice in July 05 and 07 Generally from Darby all the way past Hamilton. I've caught some giant cutties, cuutbows, and browns slurping giant MadamX on top. We stayed on the West Fork at the Alta Ranch. I have a buddy name Van who lives in Hamilton and works at GSK who can often be found at the brewery after work.

  2. Hi Mark. So glad you can visit the Bitterroot through our blog! Wow! I am assuming you did different stretches on different days! So, have you fished the lower Bitterroot? Look for keywords "Pike" and "Trico" for photos and blogs on the lower river. Amazing fishing there, too. We have friends at GSK, Doug Nation,Christian Pruitt, Cassie Buhl, that are on our Trout Unlimited board. I wonder if Van might be interested. We do hit the Brewery now and then, in fact Jack plays music there - next date, Nov. 20.
Giant MadamX - great fly! and Alta Ranch is spectacular. You know how to live. We hop you comment again and often! Send us photos if you want and we would post them.

  3. GSK-Hamilton actually buys products from us for their research on vaccine adjuvant. Cassie Buhl is a customer who also works with my buddy Van Cybulski. Van is in a band called Too Trees that has played at the brewery. Van is actually getting married next summer so we hope to join and would make it another two week vacation out there. Need to get back to GNP too. I told Van about the B-Root cleanup and shared your site with him. He is aware and says it is posted everywhere.

First float 05 was something like Connor to Grantsdale. Second float 07 was like Grantsdale to Corvallis. Personally I liked the 05 float better. We caught more trout. We only did the 07 float further down because Van's buddy Arnie wanted to avoid crowds. We caught more whitefish than trout but still beautiful.

  4. So, you know Cassie. She is great! We must take in a night at the Brewery when Two Trees is playing. Hope to see you when you come out for the wedding. Conner to Grantsdale is a good LONG stretch. And, we know what you mean about crowds. The Bitterroot is getting more and more popular because it is easy to get to and has good access points. That is one reason Jack loves the Big Hole so much. He has ways to avoid crowds somewhat (private accesses and timing) on the Bitterroot but weekends are really busy. It is slowing now that school has started and the weather is cooler. The fall is a wonderful time for the lower Bitterroot and trico fishing. Hope you can fish other stretches soon! Thanks for connecting on Facebook!
